Albania Imposes One-Year TikTok Ban Over Youth Safety Concerns

Albania has announced a one-year ban on TikTok, set to take effect early next year. Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that the decision aims to ensure the safety of teenagers and prevent violence in educational institutions. The move follows increased concerns about the harmful effects of social media on children, sparked by the death of a teenager at the hands of a classmate last November, according to Reuters.

"We will completely block TikTok for one year. TikTok will not be available in Albania," Rama declared, confirming the decision after consultations with parents and teachers across the country.

Local media reported that the murder of a 14-year-old student stemmed from an argument on social media with a classmate. Blaming platforms like TikTok, Rama stated that social media is fueling violence among the youth.

TikTok has yet to respond to the announcement.

It is worth noting that several European countries, including France, Germany, and Belgium, have already imposed restrictions on children's use of social media. Recently, Australia approved a complete ban on social media use for individuals under the age of 16.
